The Virtual Machine inside the printer

Chai Today laser printers are capable of much more than just printing documents. The printer has storage capacity which enables use of E-Forms and additional Fonts. Emulations enable printing from advanced systems with different printer languages.

HP appreciates this development and since 1998 they have embedded a Java VM in many of their electronic devices, including their laser printers. A Java VM enables the printer to run Java applications on the technical platform, which means inside the printer itself.

HP has their own counterpart to Java, which is called Chai. This has been developed in cooperation with Microsoft among others. Chai VM in its current version is fully compatible with Sun Microsystems Inc. Java VM version 1.1.8.

How can it be used?

Among other things, Chai VM runs the embedded webserver inside the printer. This provides the possibility of developing web applications located on the printer itself. These applications can be very advanced og thereby relieve servers from work, which is oriented for printing.

EuroForm has already developed several Chai applications, which are sold as standard solutions, but we are also very helpful in developing specific solutions for customers with special needs.
